What’s Your Plimsoll Line?

Happy June Everyone! I cannot believe that we are halfway through 2024! I hope that the first half of this year has been good to you! For me, the first half of this year was filled with a lot of travel, mostly professionally, but some personal as well.  In between my travel, I accomplished one of my lifelong goals which was to become a certified yoga instructor going through my 200-hour teacher training which ended in May! It has been a busy 5 months!

In one of my live sessions for my yoga teacher training, one of the instructors noted that as teachers we must be aware of what our Plimsoll line is.  A Plimsoll line or the waterline is a mark on a boat that indicates the maximum depth that the vessel can be submerged in water. This really struck me because as someone who tends to take on a lot of responsibilities and has a lot of interests, I can often find myself feeling overwhelmed very quickly. And as I embark on a new journey as a yoga teacher, it is important for me to be aware of my own feelings to make sure that I am being the best yoga teacher for my students.

The first 4 months of this year, I was on a plane at least twice each month visiting different places. I went to Minnesota, London, Ethiopia, Kenya, Florida, and Arizona all within two months. And while I love to travel, it was exhausting. So many parts of my life fell by the wayside. When I was home, I was ordering most of my meals to be delivered or buying food. I wasn’t exercising as much, it was just work, travel, and my yoga teacher training. I had reached my Plimsoll line and could handle no more without sinking completely. But as I went through this season, I understood that it was just a season, and I gave myself a lot of grace as I juggled what I needed to do.

This season has ended, as all seasons do and for May and June I find my feet again on solid ground. I gained a deeper understanding of myself and my needs and what I am capable of. I think many of us live our lives at our Plimsoll Line, meaning we are almost always living at the tipping point, one inch away from beginning to sink. To thrive, we need to figure out what that tipping point is, and then take actionable steps to make sure that we are not near our tipping point, so we don’t always feel as though we are sinking. It’s a balance and we won’t always get it right. So, my final question to you today is, “what’s your Plimsoll Line?”
