Today, the Supreme Court upheld the travel ban on several majority Muslim nations. They argued that the President was within his power to make this law and it is based on a shared nationality not on religious beliefs. The judges who ruled against the travel ban argued that this decision was based on the same beliefs that led to the  rulings that upheld internment camps set up for Japanese- Americans during WW2.  We now look back and can agree that these camps were set up because of fear and were in violation of civil rights. When history looks back how will they judge us? People often ask how did someone like Hitler get into power? How was he able to kill millions and millions of people?  The answer is easy, we allowed it. Hitler was able to rise to power because Germany was angry at being blamed for WW1. The country and Europe were ripe with anger and unrest. Now as we look in Europe, we see a rise in nationalism due to the migrant crisis. A migrant crisis that is partly due to millions of Syrians fleeing their homelands; fleeing because their country has been in a civil war for years. There’s unrest in the Middle East because other countries have for years been fighting there in the hopes of ending terrorism.  It’s interesting how because we seem to not understand history or current events we don’t see how the countries we live in are directly related to the issues we’re dealing with and how it creates a vicious cycle of nationalism.

Next week we will celebrate the 4^th of July here in the United States. I’m an American born citizen and I can honestly say that I have no idea what it means to be American. As a black woman, there are many who feel that I don’t belong in America. When the declaration of independence was signed my ancestors were slaves. My family immigrated here, and the president last week said that immigrants were vermin who were coming to infest our country. Never mind that two out of his three wives are immigrants as are his ancestors.

Every single law maker who sits by as this country becomes more and more divided and the values that so many claim to hold so dear are stripped day by day, should be ashamed to hold their heads up in public. Their silence is louder than anything they could say. I’m not going to write a post about the value and contributions that immigrants have made because someone’s worth isn’t based on what they can bring it’s based on their value as a human being. There aren’t words to describe how I feel. I’ve stopped watching the evening news because it’s too much. I feel like Rome is burning and Nero is playing the fiddle. To the younger generation, I’m so sorry. Please know that there were people who were outraged and angry. We’re failing you and you will be the ones to pay. My only hope is that maybe you’ll be the ones to do what we couldn’t. After our parents and your grandparents have destroyed what’s left of the world, you’ll come along and save it.
